The Walter WL17 indexable insert is available in neutral, right-hand, and left-hand versions for copy turning (profiling). All versions can be used in the same tool. The Walter Turn W1011-S-P external turning toolholders for Swiss-type automatic lathes and multiple-spindle machines, as well as the W1210/W1211 boring bars for internal profiling, facing, and axial grooving accept the WL17 indexable insert.
The W1011-S-P toolholder enables forward and reverse turning, toward and away from the spindle. The technology uses cutting edges from both sides of the 35° included angle of the insert corner and runs at high feed rates. The option to perform forward or reverse turning, as well as the unique insert pocket and support, help maximize tool life. The inserts feature three cutting edges at a 50° copying angle and measure 17mm per side.
Features
The WL17 provides stability against vibrations in cut due to the robust Walter Turn WL positive engagement system using a seating surface sintered into the base of the carbide insert engaging against the tool’s 3-pocket insert seat. The inserts enable 50% higher indexing accuracy compared to conventional ISO indexable inserts.
The toolholder features rake face cooling for effective chip removal, particularly on Swiss-style automatic lathes and multiple-spindle machines.

Applications
- WL17 indexable inserts: copy turning radial undercuts up to 30° or 50°, axial undercuts of 30°, profiling high-precision components
- 3-sided WL inserts: replacements for ISO VBMT, VCMT, DCMT indexable inserts with two cutting edges having less stability
