Maine's main focus in defense manufacturing

Defense contracts have been steadily increasing since 2008.

● Bath Iron Works - $1 billion
● Hardwood Products - $106 million 
● 381 Construction - $99 million 
● Cianbro - $89 million
● General Dynamics - $36 million 
*These corporations account for 55% of defense contracts awarded in Maine since 2020.

Maine’s defense contracts represent 0.5% of all defense contracts issued in the United States from 2020 to 2022.

From 2008-2010 to 2020-2022, defense contracts increased 68.7% in Maine.

Military infrastructure:
12,818 employees
● 797 active-duty military personnel
74.1% decrease since 2008
● 3,424 National Guard members 
19.5% decrease since 2008
● 8,597 DOD civilian employees 
29.6% increase since 2008

Economic impact:
● 47,473 defense manufacturing jobs
● 7.4% of the state’s employment
● 27,963 direct jobs  
● 19,510 indirect or induced jobs
● $3.5 billion in income
