DMG MORI

DMG MORI is participating in this year’s RAPID + TCT exhibition, taking place from June 25th - 27th. As a global leader in manufacturing technologies, DMG MORI USA is presenting an array of new technology advancements in Additive Manufacturing technologies, including: the LASERTEC 30 SLM US designed and manufactured in the USA, as well as the LASERTEC 12 SLM, unmatched precision down to 35μm laser spot size; Blue Laser on LASERTEC DED machines for highly reflective materials; Scan3D is an integrated 3D scanning solution on hybrid DED machines; and with an extended length up to 3m is the LASERTEC 3000/ 3000 DED hybrid, a hybrid machine combining additive and subtractive processes for unmatched flexibility and precision. DMG MORI drives the adoption of Additive Manufacturing, assembling 2,400 3D printed machine components per year in their machine tools. Together, with an unrivaled support network in the USA and worldwide, DMG MORI is the leading solution provider in Additive Manufacturing.

Scan3D is an integrated 3D scanning solution on LASERTEC DED machines. Scan 3D offers unparalleled accuracy and speed, enabling manufacturers to seamlessly integrate precise three-dimensional data into their workflows. Mounted in the machine spindle, the Scan 3D scans the workpiece and creates a digital representation as an STL file. Furthermore, Scan 3D is wireless and completely integrated into the machine tool magazine, just like any other tool, allowing automated tool changes. Whether it's for repair, quality control, or reverse engineering, Scan 3D is poised to become an indispensable tool in modern manufacturing.

Another highlight is the extended machine envelope on the LASERTEC 3000 | 3000 DED hybrid, a groundbreaking multi-tasking machine that combines Additive Manufacturing and high-precision subtractive processes. Originally launched in 2021, the LASERTEC 3000 DED hybrid now offers an increase in the distance between spindles from 1500mm (about 4.92ft) to 3000mm (about 9.84ft), allowing for the handling of larger parts. Designed to tackle the most demanding applications from aerospace to automotive, this machine offers multi material solutions in repair, coating, and production of parts with up to 3 kW laser power. By enhancing productivity and simplifying process chains for complex part production, this DED hybrid machine is at the forefront of manufacturing innovation. Blue Light Laser has become a new option on DMG MORI’s LASERTEC DED hybrid machines enabling deposition of highly reflective materials such as copper and increasing productivity for all metals in energy deposition. At 450nm wavelength, applications range from space components to high-performance tooling components.

The LASERTEC 30 SLM US is Buy America Act compliant with over 60% of the components made in the US. With a build volume of 300 x 300 x300 mm (about 11.81in) and a 1200W programmable laser allowing for on-the-fly changes between 80μm beam spot to 240 μm ring spot in 7 laser modes, is designed to meet the rigorous demands of industries such as aerospace, tooling and medical. Its innovative SLM technology ensures superior material properties and surface finishes, making it ideal for producing complex geometries and high-performance components.

The LASERTEC 12 SLM is a pinnacle of precision in selective laser melting technology. This advanced machine is designed to cater to industries requiring exceptional detail and accuracy, such as medical, dental, and fine jewelry manufacturing. The LASERTEC 12 SLM boasts an ultra-fine 35μm laser focus diameter with a build volume of 125 x 125 x 200mm and 200W or 400W laser. Furthermore, rePLUG powder modules are used, allowing for material change overs in an inert environment in under 2 hours. This approach maintains the quality of the powder, improves safety by minimizing the amount of direct contact the operator has with the powder, and eliminates the need for external sieving equipment. The machine's compact design, coupled with a user-friendly interface, allows for seamless integration into various manufacturing environments.

DMG MORI
has made significant advancements by integrating Additive Manufacturing processes into their own production, printing 2,400 machine tool components today. One remarkable example is the drawbar for its speedMASTER spindles produced on the LASERTEC 3000 DED hybrid. These drawbars require a hard surface to resist wear from the movement of disc springs during routine use. To meet this requirement, DMG MORI now applies a 0.5mm (about 0.02in) coating of high-speed steel, with a hardness of 62 HRC, using Directed Energy Deposition (DED) technology onto stainless steel drawbars. Among the DMG MORI machine models that employ the speedMASTER spindle is the LASERTEC 3000 DED hybrid itself as well as several other machine tools in the DMG MORI portfolio. Using a hybrid Additive Manufacturing process allowed DMG MORI to reduce 7 workstations into 1 workstation resulting in a lead time reduction from 14 days to only 2 hours.
